It can be very hard lớn track the meaning of these little nerdy comic-book teasers—so let me give you a hand, in chronological order.

*

Kraglin and the Arrow: We all know and, hopefully, love Yondu’s right-hand man at this point. Played by director James Gunn’s brother (and Gilmore Girl alum) Sean Gunn, Kraglin got an expanded role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 & will likely have an even bigger part to lớn play in Vol. 3. In the first post-film stinger, we see him playing with Yondu’s whistle-controlled arrow/fin prototype & accidentally spearing poor Drax in the process. Expect more out-of-control arrow antics in Vol. 3.

*

The Original Guardians: There’s no way for the average bear to know this, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 slyly snuck the original Guardians of the Galaxy line-up into the movie. Sylvester Stallone was playing a version the character Starhawk, or Stakar. (Sadly, Stallone never gets to chia sẻ a scene with his Tango & Cash co-star Kurt Russell.) In the film, Stakar’s an old Ravager buddy of Yondu’s—but it’s his other friends who are the most interesting here. Charlie-27 (Ving Rhames), Martinex (Michael Rosenbaum), and Aleta (Michelle Yeoh) are all also members of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the comics. In fact ,they are the originals. In the books, Star Lord and his crew actually lifted their name from Charlie-27 et al. The mid-credits scene shows a grieving Stakar suggesting lớn his friends that they go have an adventure of their own. Does that suggest spin-off? Probably not. But it does suggest that these Guardians will probably show up lớn give Star Lord & the rest trouble in Vol. 3.

In fact, James Gunn has already teased that Miley Cyrus—who voices the computer Mainframe in that scene—will likely be coming back in the next film.

*

Adam Warlock: For a more complete rundown of the mid-credits “Adam” reveal, you can read this. But suffice khổng lồ say that lượt thích Kraglin casually mentioning Peter Quill’s dad at the kết thúc of the original Guardians of the Galaxy, this is a teaser of a villain who is on his way. Between Adam Warlock and the Original Guardians, Vol. 3 is already looking very crowded.

*

Teenage Groot: Much of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 feels like a remix of the original film. So, of course, no credits sequence would be complete without a check-in with the adolescence of Groot. No major explanation needed here, of course. (Though we will have a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Teen Groot next week.) The real question is, will Groot still be a teenager by the time the Guardians return? If 2018’s Avenger’s: Infinity War takes place four years after this film, there’s no telling how far in the future Vol. 3 will be set. And Groots, sigh—they grow up so fast!

Stan Lee: The ubiquitous Marvel fixture gets not one but two cameos in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. In the middle of the film, we see Lee out in space with some big-headed aliens saying that he once dressed up as a Fed-Ex man. That’s a reference to his cameo in Captain America: Civil War. Does that mean all the various Stan Lees we’ve seen in the Marvel films are the same guy? Is he, in fact, a Watcher? That’s the official name of those big—headed aliens he’s talking to lớn who, well, watch what’s going on in the universe và have taken a vow lớn never intervene. Is that some subtle dig at Lee’s role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Either way, the Watchers ditch poor Lee out in space. Will he make it back lớn earth in time khổng lồ cameo in Spider-Man: Homecoming? No doubt.
